How Children can Develop Strong Social Skills

Academic skills are not the only factor leading to school success for children. In fact, a study published by researchers at Vanderbilt University identified the top 10 skills that teachers say students need to succeed. When children are actively taught to be cooperative and use self-control, there is more time for learning in the classroom. According to Gearing Up for Kindergarten's research and studies, social Skills that lead to school success (based on a survey of more than 8,000 teachers):

• Listening to others

• Following the steps of instructions

• Following the rules • Ignoring distractions

• Asking for help

• Taking turns when talking

• Getting along with others

• Staying calm with others

• Being responsible for behavior

• Doing nice things for others
