Research & Findings

Research on the Gearing Up for Kindergarten program suggests:

  • Parent-school relationship is enhanced through participation in the program.
  • Children and parents who are prepared and know what to expect in school tend to experience less anxiety and greater enjoyment when entering school. 
  • Skills/Development (compared to children who did not participate in Program)
  1. Social skill development - 3 x higher
  2. Emotional skill development - 2 x higher
  3. Familiarity with numbers - 4 x higher
  4. Familiarity with the alphabet - 2 1/2 x higher

Students with involved parents are more likely to:

  • Earn higher grades and test scores
  • Have better social skills
  • Have decreased alcohol use, violence, and antisocial behaviors
  • Make better transitions from elementary school to middle school, then high school and beyond
  • Stay in school 

Research and evaluation has been conducted with the Gearing Up For Kindergarten program since its beginning in 2006.  Summaries of program findings include:
